Lib Dem MP Cameron Thomas arrested on suspicion of assault

Cameron Thomas, the Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for Tewkesbury, has been arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behavior and assault. The 43-year-old MP was taken into custody by Gloucestershire police on Wednesday.

Following his arrest, the Liberal Democrats immediately suspended Thomas, removing both the party whip and his membership pending the outcome of the police investigation. A spokesperson for the party stated they are unable to comment further while the police inquiry is ongoing.

On Wednesday [17 June], a man in his 40s from Tewkesbury was arrested on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The man was interviewed by officers before later being released on police bail. Enquiries into the allegations made against him are ongoing.

Gloucestershire police confirmed that the man was interviewed by officers and subsequently released on police bail. The investigation into the allegations is active and ongoing. Thomas, who won the Tewkesbury seat from the Conservatives in 2024 with a significant majority, previously served as a military police officer for 23 years, including tours in Iraq and the Falkland Islands.

Thomas's arrest comes shortly after a post appeared on his Facebook page showing him in a House of Commons England football shirt, advocating for extended paternity leave. He had also recently attended a local fair in his constituency. His parliamentary work has often focused on defense and foreign policy, advocating for closer collaboration with NATO and EU partners.
