Liberals clear parliamentary threshold in new poll

Sweden’s Liberals have moved above the parliamentary threshold in a new poll, giving the struggling party a late boost before Sunday’s election. TV4/Novus measured support at 4.3%, up one percentage point in a week.

Party leader Simona Mohamsson said she felt the party had favorable momentum. “Sweden needs four more years of blue-yellow cooperation, not a dangerous turn to the left,” she said in a written comment to Svenska Dagbladet. “I will work every waking minute to ensure exactly that. Sweden needs a party that prioritizes schools and freedom.”

The result marked the second consecutive Novus poll in which the Liberals recorded a clear increase. Support stood at 1.9% on Aug. 19, rose to 3.3% a week later, and reached 4.3% in the poll published on Sept. 7. TV4 said the latest change was statistically significant.

Novus chief executive Torbjörn Sjöström said Mohamsson’s standing as a party leader had improved slightly, while the party had not gained ownership of specific policy issues. Instead, he said, the Liberals had strongly emphasized that the Tidö governing bloc could not manage without them.

The Liberals remain above the threshold in only one poll taken close to the election. In the latest Demoskop poll, they received 2.8%. The Tidö parties collectively held 47.9% in the Novus survey, while the red-green parties led with 50.3%. The poll was conducted from Sept. 1 to 5.

I look at other polls as well. In connection with this, we see that Mohamsson has gained slightly in confidence as a party leader. They have not really won ownership of any policy issues, but above all they have emphasized that without the Liberals, the Tidö bloc cannot manage, and it is quite clear that this is what has got through.
