Liberec Zoo Seal Dies After Ingesting Doll's Head; Investigation Deemed Risky

The Liberec Zoo in the Czech Republic is mourning the loss of Hugo, its sole Humboldt's seal, who died at the age of 17. The seal's unexpected death has raised serious questions, with a pathologist discovering a doll's head within its digestive tract. The torso of the doll had been found by a keeper in the seal's pool shortly before Hugo's demise.

David Nejedlo, the zoo's director, and Luboš Melichar, the head zoologist, addressed the circumstances surrounding Hugo's death. They explained that the seal's health had been deteriorating, but a preventative examination was deemed too risky. The zoo officials emphasized that investigating the precise cause of death presented significant challenges.

Following this tragic event, the zoo has confirmed that the Humboldt's seal species will not be reintroduced to the Ještěd region. The incident has cast a somber shadow over the zoo, prompting a review of its animal care protocols and a decision to cease housing this particular species.
