Libertadores and Sudamericana Enter the Decisive Stage

The quarter-finals of South America’s two major continental competitions begin with three matches featuring new pairings, a familiar rivalry and teams arriving with confidence.

In the Copa Libertadores, Fluminense will host Platense at the Maracanã at 6 p.m. Bolivia time. Fluminense reached the quarter-finals by defeating Independiente Rivadavia in a penalty shootout. Argentine club Platense also advanced from the spot after eliminating Coquimbo Unido.

The match will be the first official meeting between the clubs, opening their history against each other at one of South American football’s most prominent venues.

The Copa Sudamericana schedule begins with Independiente Santa Fe hosting Vasco da Gama at Bogotá’s Nemesio Camacho El Campín, also at 6 p.m. This will be the clubs’ first official encounter. Santa Fe advanced after eliminating River Plate in a penalty shootout at the Monumental, while Vasco secured its place with a 4-1 away win over Olimpia.

Later, at 8:30 p.m., Boca Juniors will play São Paulo at La Bombonera in one of the day’s most anticipated matches. The clubs have met five times, with two victories apiece and one draw. São Paulo eliminated Bolívar 4-2 on aggregate, while Boca Juniors advanced decisively with a 7-1 aggregate victory over Recoleta FC. The quarter-finals will begin to identify the leading contenders for the season’s continental titles.
