Liechtenstein Abortion Decriminalization Initiative Gathers Near-Record Signatures

An initiative to legalize abortion in Liechtenstein has achieved a significant milestone, collecting nearly 1,000 signatures, far surpassing its target, demonstrating strong public support for reform. The "Fristenlösung Initiative," or "deadline solution," seeks to align Liechtenstein's laws with those of Switzerland, where abortion has been legal since 2002.

Supporters submitted 4,970 signatures to the chancellery on July 31, a number that places it among the most successful initiatives in the principality's history. Only three other proposals have gathered more than 3,000 signatures, and just one has exceeded the current initiative's count. This overwhelming response suggests widespread discontent with the existing legal framework surrounding abortion.

"The numbers speak for themselves," stated Tatjana As’Ad, secretary of the Freie Liste party and a member of the initiative's committee. She believes the results clearly show that Liechtensteiners are unhappy with the status quo. The proposed legislation would permit abortions within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy, allow medical professionals to provide information on the procedure, and ensure coverage by basic health insurance, mirroring the Swiss model.

The initiative's success means the proposal will now proceed to a legislative vote. The high level of public engagement highlights a growing demand for reproductive rights reform within the small European principality.
