Lightning strikes near photographer during severe Dalmatian thunderstorm; multiple fires reported

Dalmatia, Croatia – A severe thunderstorm swept through parts of Dalmatia on Sunday, leaving a trail of damage and raising concerns about fire safety. The storm, which brought heavy rain, thunder, hail, and a sudden drop in temperature, developed over the Dinara, Kamešnica, and Dalmatian Zagora regions. The intense electrical activity significantly increased the risk of fires, with initial reports suggesting that lightning strikes may have ignited several blazes.

Fires broke out in Tugar, Mosor, Kozjak, and Bisko, requiring the continuous engagement of firefighting units throughout the day to bring them under control. While many residents observed the storm from the safety of their homes, some meteorology enthusiasts ventured out to capture the dramatic weather phenomena.

Mate Potočki, a member of the Crometeo team, was on Pomišljaj hill near Bilice when the storm approached. He managed to film a startling moment when lightning struck just meters away from his position. Although no one was injured, the close call served as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with thunderstorms. Potočki and his brother Ante have gained public recognition for their storm-chasing activities and documentation of extreme weather events.

Experts emphasize that during thunderstorms, no location in open spaces is completely safe, particularly on hilltops or elevated areas. They advise retreating from observation points well before the storm arrives. The safest options for shelter are solid structures or enclosed vehicles, while open areas, trees, metal structures, coastlines, and bodies of water should be avoided.
