Ligue 1: Nightmare evening for Lens as Lorient win before Champions League opener

Lens suffered another setback at the worst possible moment. The French runners-up lost 1-0 to Lorient at Bollaert on Saturday, just days before opening their Champions League campaign away to Slavia Prague.

The defeat followed last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Strasbourg and left Lens ninth in the Ligue 1 table. Lorient, meanwhile, claimed its first victory of the season and moved provisionally into seventh. Mamadou Koné scored the only goal in the 54th minute.

Lorient had already looked the more dangerous side during the opening half-hour. The visitors repeatedly found space behind and on the wings of Lens’ defense, although they wasted their first chances. Koné missed a particularly good opportunity in the 28th minute when he shot too weakly after being left alone in the box.

Lens improved before halftime and pushed toward the Lorient penalty area, but Amadou Haidara’s effort, saved by Yvon Mvogo in the 44th minute, was their clearest threat. The home side returned from the break with greater control, only to concede after a misplaced pass from Ismaelo Ganiou allowed Panos Katseris and Koné to exploit a loose ball.

Lorient nearly doubled its lead when Jean-Victor Makengo shot wide from the penalty spot in the 60th minute. Lens struggled to create danger after falling behind. Florian Thauvin, influential at the start of the season, found little space, while Abdallah Sima and Thorgan Hazard had little impact. Substitutes Florian Sotoca and Odsonne Edouard could not change the match. Lens managed only late attempts from Michaël Cuisance and Andrija Bulatovic, and the final whistle brought boos from Bollaert. Lens also lost Matthieu Udol and Yacine Titraoui to injury, while Souleymane Sagnan received a late red card.
