Lika is only the beginning? Croatians across the country raise their voices: ‘We do not want them poisoning our land, water and air’

“We do not want them poisoning our land, water and air.” That message has spread across Croatia as citizens call for a protest in Zagreb over the waste crisis in Gospić.

The civic initiative “Gospić Is Our Home” is inviting residents of Lika and people from across the country to gather in the capital’s main square. Its appeal says citizens must show that united voters can force the authorities to clean up the mess left in Gospić by what it describes as a criminal and irresponsible group.

The campaign says 37,000 tonnes of waste were brought to Gospić from neighboring countries over several years, including tonnes of hazardous material. Organizers accuse those responsible of ignoring warnings for months, then questioning why protesters are speaking out to protect their own health and that of their children.

The initiative presents Lika as part of a national pattern rather than an isolated case. Its messages describe environmental disasters across Croatia and call on people to “walk for Lika, walk for Croatia.” Online comments showed both support for the protest and criticism of political groups involved in Zagreb’s waste disputes, while some commenters questioned how large the gathering would be.
