Like under the Nazis: AfD attacks Bauhaus as insufficiently patriotic

The Bauhaus, once forced to close under Nazi pressure, has again become a target of political criticism in Germany. Members of the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, say the world-famous art school represents a dead end of modernity and is not sufficiently patriotic.

The school closed in 1933 after coming under pressure from the Nazis. A century later, its ideas and legacy have returned to the political spotlight.

The dispute has become part of the campaign ahead of Sunday’s election in Saxony-Anhalt, where the Bauhaus and the question of what constitutes German culture have taken on electoral significance.
