Likud petitions election committee to penalize Yair Golan over alleged 'electioneering'

Israel's ruling Likud party has formally petitioned the election committee to take action against Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats Party, accusing him of prohibited electioneering. The complaint centers on a social media video posted by Golan on August 25, 2026.

In the video, Golan condemned MK Zvi Sukkot for admitting to the destruction of a Palestinian monument in the West Bank earlier that day. Golan asserted that Sukkot's actions "did not happen in a vacuum" and were fueled by the "spirit of Netanyahu." He further argued that Sukkot should be "behind bars and bolts, not in the Knesset of Israel," and that such extremist actions endanger Israeli national security and IDF soldiers.

Golan explicitly linked Sukkot's actions to the diversion of IDF forces on the eve of the October 7 massacre and declared, "On October 27, we will put an end to this," signaling his intent to challenge the current Netanyahu coalition in the upcoming elections. In response to Golan's post, Sukkot reportedly threatened legal action if the video was not removed within half an hour.

He claimed he acted after multiple appeals to the IDF to remove such "terror monuments" and described his act as "a small taste."
