Limburg pools open early for anticipated heatwave

As an exceptionally warm weekend approaches, several outdoor swimming pools in Belgium's Limburg province are preparing to open their doors earlier than scheduled. This proactive measure aims to give residents a chance to cool off amidst the rising temperatures.

In Wellen, the Malpertuus outdoor pool will open its gates starting Friday. Similarly, the Kikmolen pool in Opgrimbie (Maasmechelen) will also welcome swimmers this weekend. Both facilities typically open on July 1st, but the forecast for high temperatures has prompted an earlier launch.

Stefan Gorissen from Kikmolen explained that the early opening depends on securing enough lifeguards, many of whom are students currently occupied with exams. "We primarily work with students, but they have exams now," he stated. "I am still looking for about 3 lifeguards. If I can find enough, we can open, otherwise the pool will unfortunately remain closed on Friday." He added that patrons understand that safety is paramount and would accept a closure if sufficient staff cannot be found.

Recreation center Wilhelm Tell in Oudsbergen is still deliberating its opening date, with a decision pending later this week. Their outdoor pool also normally opens on July 1st. Lode Nulmans from Wilhelm Tell indicated that the decision hinges on the weather forecast, as they would remain closed if significant rain is predicted.
