Linares, Nariño, faces dual crisis of fires and armed group violence

The Colombian municipality of Linares in the Nariño department is grappling with a severe crisis, simultaneously battling devastating forest fires and confronting violence from illegal armed groups. The dual threats have left the approximately 5,000 inhabitants in a state of deep concern, with many seeking refuge in their homes.

Recent forest fires have destroyed crops, causing alarm among the local farming communities. Compounding this environmental disaster, intense clashes between armed groups erupted on Saturday, August 22, prompting the deployment of National Army troops to the rural areas. The mayor of Linares, Iván Zambrano, described the current period as "very difficult" for the municipality. He issued a message of hope to the town's children and youth, encouraging them to steer clear of destructive paths and embrace sports and cultural activities instead.

Regional authorities are actively engaged in addressing the crisis. The Nariño governorate's secretary of Peace and Citizen Coexistence, Álex González, stated that the regional administration is coordinating with the National Army to maintain territorial control. The Colombian Air Force has also provided support to help control the fires and stabilize the area, enabling collaboration with risk management agencies and local firefighters. The Ombudsman's Office has issued an urgent appeal to illegal armed groups, demanding they respect and protect the civilian population and ensure safe access for emergency responders in Linares and the neighboring municipality of Los Andes-Sotomayor.
