Lionel Messi honoured with prestigious Princess of Asturias Sports Award

Inter Miami CF star Lionel Messi has received the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, marking a historic moment as the first individual footballer to be honored with the prestigious accolade. The award recognizes exceptional contributions to sports, celebrating achievements both on and off the field.

The jury, which included foundation president Teresa Perales, selected Messi for his unparalleled career and impact on the sport. "The truth is that for me it is a great pride to be able to receive this recognition because of the importance it has and for the fact that it is recognised not only for what I do on the pitch but also off the pitch," Messi stated upon receiving the news. He expressed deep gratitude and happiness for the honor.

Messi's career is adorned with numerous accolades. He led Argentina to victory in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2021 Copa America, alongside an Olympic gold medal. At the club level, his trophy cabinet includes multiple La Liga titles and UEFA Champions League trophies with FC Barcelona, as well as recent successes with Inter Miami CF, including the 2025 MLS Cup and 2024 Supporters' Shield.

Individually, Messi has claimed a record eight Ballon d'Or awards, among many other honors. The Princess of Asturias Award for Sports has previously been bestowed upon legendary athletes such as Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher, Serena Williams, and Eliud Kipchoge, further underscoring the significance of Messi's achievement in joining this elite group.
