Jorge Messi, the father of football superstar Lionel Messi, has died at the age of 68 following a lengthy illness, his family has confirmed to Reuters.

He spent his final months alternating between his home and a medical clinic in Rosario, Argentina, accompanied by his wife, Celia, and their children Rodrigo, Matias, and Maria Sol. It was at the clinic in Rosario that he ultimately passed away.

Lionel Messi had spent time with his father after the World Cup before returning to his club, Inter Miami, where he played just a week ago. Jorge Messi closely followed his son Lionel throughout his career, which began in the early years at Barcelona. He provided crucial support and served as his agent for many years.

Newell's Old Boys, Lionel Messi's childhood club, issued a farewell message on the social platform X, honoring Jorge Messi. "Jorge was the support and the person who, with vision, rigor, and love, supported the career of the best player of all time along with his wife, Celia Cuccittini," the club wrote. "His constant support and leadership behind the scenes were decisive in backing every step of Lionel's career."
