Lions and Wiz tangled in fierce KBO race for first place

The KBO League’s top standings remain unsettled even after teams completed 84% of the 720-game schedule. Samsung and KT are fighting for first place and a direct ticket to the Korean Series, while LG and KIA are separated by a fraction of a game in the race for third and a direct place in the semifinals.

Samsung moved ahead after KT lost all three games of its weekend series against KIA while Samsung won two of three against LG. The Lions lead by 1.5 games, but KT has played three fewer games and has 26 remaining, compared with Samsung’s 23. The teams will meet four more times, including a game in Daegu on Sept. 9.

Samsung holds the stronger statistical profile. Its 4.12 team ERA ranks second behind Doosan’s 3.67, its bullpen ERA of 3.89 leads the league, and its .280 team batting average is also first. KT ranks second in batting at .279 but fourth in ERA at 4.40.

Asian Games selections could disrupt both teams. KT will lose So Hyeong-jun, Oh Won-seok and Park Young-hyun from Sept. 14 and must play 10 games during the national team call-up period. Samsung will also lose Lee Jae-hyeon, Kim Ji-chan and Bae Chan-seung, but without a starting pitcher missing and with fewer games scheduled.

The third-place contest is even tighter. LG leads KIA by half a game but has played two more games. LG has 22 games left and KIA 24. KIA’s numbers are stronger, with a 4.25 ERA, a .272 batting average and a .789 OPS, while LG ranks seventh in ERA at 4.82 and eighth in batting at .266. KIA will nevertheless play seven games during the Asian Games without Kim Do-yeong, Park Jae-hyun and Seong Yeong-tak. LG and KIA have five games left against each other, including a three-game series from Oct. 3 to 5. The league enters its remaining-games schedule on Sept. 8, increasing travel and fatigue concerns.
