Litgrid Launches Tender for Lithuania's Largest Transformer Substation for 'Harmony Link' Project

Litgrid, Lithuania's electricity transmission system operator, has initiated a major tender for the construction of the Gižai transformer substation. This facility, set to span approximately 35 hectares in the Vilkaviškis district, is poised to become the largest substation under Litgrid's operation in Lithuania.

"We are announcing one of the largest electricity infrastructure procurements in Lithuania," stated Andrius Šemeškevičius, CEO of Litgrid. "The Gižai transformer substation will not only be the largest in Lithuania but also the main hub through which 'Harmony Link' will connect the Lithuanian and Polish electricity systems. The pace and quality of this object's implementation directly depend on our ability to complete the entire project by the end of 2030."

The tender is open to both Lithuanian and international contractors with experience in similar electricity infrastructure projects. The Gižai substation will feature advanced technology, including the first use of 220 kilovolt (kV) voltage within Lithuania's transmission system. Voltage from Poland will be transformed here to the 330 kV and 110 kV voltages used in the Lithuanian grid.

The contract is expected to be signed in the third quarter of 2027, with a duration of 54 months. Litgrid aims for parallel design and construction processes to align with the "Harmony Link" project's overall timeline. This cross-border connection is a joint effort with Poland's PSE and is the final infrastructure project for the Baltic states' electricity system synchronization program, designed to boost cross-border energy exchange and integrate renewable energy sources.
