Local Polls Likely by Year-End, Election Commission Says

Bangladesh's Election Commission (EC) is targeting the end of November or December for the commencement of local government elections, with the official schedule expected to be announced by September. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin stated that while the process will begin this year, some elections might carry over into the next.

We hope to announce the schedule within September. Ultimately, some elections may go into next year, but the process will begin this year.

Speaking to reporters at the EC headquarters in Dhaka, Nasir Uddin confirmed that preparations for the elections are well underway. He noted that the exact election dates are contingent on several factors outside the EC's direct control. The commission plans to consult with relevant ministries to potentially adjust the timing of annual examinations, which could facilitate the use of polling centers.

We will try to discuss with the relevant ministry and request them to finish [annual] exams quickly. If arrangements can be made, we may start by November-end or in December.

Earlier on Wednesday, a delegation from the EC, including the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners, paid a courtesy call to President Mirza Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban. During the meeting, they briefed the president on the ongoing election preparations. The President assured the commission of full support, including the potential deployment of the army to assist civil authorities if necessary.

He [the president] has assured us of all kinds of assistance, including the deployment of the army, if needed, in aid of civil authority.

Regarding the proposed amendments to local government laws, Nasir Uddin explained that the draft has been sent to the relevant ministry for approval. He indicated that if the amendments are not passed in time, the elections will proceed under the existing legal framework. The commission is working to ensure a smooth electoral process while navigating logistical and legislative considerations.

This has been sent to the ministry. The Local Government Division will approve it. If the amendments are not passed, elections will be held under the existing law.
