Look Back: Gloria Steinem on Founding Ms. Magazine

Gloria Steinem looked back at the founding of Ms. Magazine in a CBS News report that originally aired in September 2023. Steinem, who died on Sept. 2, 2026, at age 92, was in her 30s and working as a columnist for New York magazine when she helped launch the publication.

The magazine aimed to push feminism into the mainstream. Steinem discussed its origins with Rita Braver, revisiting the creation of a publication that became closely associated with the women’s liberation movement.

Braver also spoke with Katherine Spillar, the executive editor of Ms. Spillar compiled “50 Years of Ms.: The Best of the Pathfinding Magazine That Ignited a Revolution,” an anthology marking the magazine’s 50-year history.
