Looking for China? Typhoon Sadler Strikes Fujian After Crossing Seven Provinces, Sets Rare Third-Landfall Record

Typhoon Sadler made its third landfall in China at typhoon strength early on the 3rd, coming ashore near Gulei on the coast of Zhangpu county in Fujian’s Zhangzhou city at about 6:30 a.m.

China’s National Meteorological Center measured maximum winds of 23 meters per second at landfall, putting Sadler at tropical-storm strength, equivalent to a light typhoon under Taiwan’s classification. The center continued to issue yellow alerts for typhoons and heavy rain.

Sadler first reached China on Aug. 28 in Zhejiang’s Yuhuan city, then made another landfall in Wenzhou’s Longwan district. It went on to circle southwestward across Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi and Guangdong. Although the system weakened into a disturbance, its remaining cloud system moved back over the sea from the Leizhou Peninsula on Aug. 31 and rebuilt into a tropical depression.

The system later struck Hainan as a tropical depression, regained typhoon status on Sept. 1 and lingered over the southern Taiwan Strait before moving west toward Fujian. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration said the storm or tropical depression’s outer circulation could bring brief showers or thunderstorms across the island. Rain would be more noticeable north of Taoyuan and in Yilan, where localized heavy or torrential rain remained possible. Other areas could also see localized downpours.
