Lost and Found: Exhibition Unveils Newly Identified Works by Sculptor Alajos Strobl

A new exhibition, "The Source of Immortality," is set to unveil a significant collection of works by the renowned Hungarian sculptor Alajos Strobl. Opening on July 22nd at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, the exhibition is part of the Strobl memorial year and aims to provide a comprehensive overview of his artistic legacy.

Curators Apolka Erős and Dániel Borovi emphasized that the exhibition's goal extends beyond merely displaying Strobl's oeuvre. It seeks to illuminate the process of discovery, particularly highlighting recently identified pieces that remained hidden for over a century. These newly recognized works are expected to offer fresh perspectives and enrich the interpretation of Strobl's art.

The exhibition will feature approximately 45 sculptures, drawing from prominent collections including the Museum of Fine Arts – Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, the Gödöllő City Museum, and the Róth Miksa Memorial House and Collection, alongside private holdings. This diverse selection aims to present a holistic picture of Strobl's career, spanning the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a pivotal period in Hungarian art.

A unique aspect of the exhibition lies in its presentation of works that were previously unknown or misattributed, some only identified through recent research. This investigative aspect, described as akin to a "detective activity," involves cross-referencing information from the University's archives, the Strobl family, and the Alajos Strobl Memorial Foundation, as well as emerging details from social media. The exhibition also highlights Strobl's creativity born from overcoming financial and bureaucratic obstacles, showcasing an alternative context for his valuable life's work.
