Lost Luggage? Mexico's Profeco Details Airline Compensation Rules

Lost or damaged luggage can be a significant headache for air travelers, but Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has established clear guidelines for compensation. According to Profeco, passengers are entitled to financial restitution if their airline mishandling their bags.

For lost, destroyed, or damaged carry-on luggage, the compensation amount is set at 6,759 pesos, equivalent to 80 Universal Minimum Units (UMA). If checked baggage is lost or damaged, the compensation increases to 12,673 pesos, or 150 UMA.

Profeco also advises passengers on proper baggage procedures. For domestic flights, travelers can check between 15 and 25 kilograms of luggage for free, depending on the aircraft's capacity. Additionally, they are allowed two carry-on items totaling no more than 10 kilograms, provided they meet specific size dimensions. Exceeding these limits may incur additional charges, subject to airline availability.

For international flights, baggage documentation is governed by applicable international treaties. Profeco maintains customer service modules at the Mexico City International Airport and offers phone support for consumers needing assistance with airline-related issues.
