Love story: My dog Teddy was more than just a pet. We needed each other

Judith Geppert's life, marked by achievements like being an Olympic torchbearer and an advocate for people with disabilities, has often been met with skepticism about her capabilities. However, her dogs, particularly Teddy, offered an unwavering source of acceptance and love.

I had lost my dog Tyson who was with me for seven years, and I needed a companion with four legs to love.

Geppert found Teddy, a rescue Irish Wolfhound cross, through the RSPCA NSW website in 2016. Initially, Teddy was wary of her wheelchair, a common reaction for rescue animals adjusting to new environments. It took time and patience for him to overcome his fear and bond with Geppert.

He didn't like me at first, he was scared of my wheelchair and refused to come near me.

Their connection deepened as they adapted to each other's needs. Geppert, who uses a wheelchair and has cerebral palsy, found ways to interact with Teddy, using her left foot for cuddles and her voice for praise when she couldn't easily pat him. Teddy, in turn, learned to seek Geppert's permission before interacting with others, demonstrating a deep understanding and loyalty.

But I loved him the moment I saw him.

Teddy's presence provided Geppert with a profound sense of companionship and purpose. He depended on her, and she on him, filling a void left by the loss of her previous dog, Tyson. For Geppert, Teddy was more than a pet; he was a friend who accepted her unconditionally, offering a love that transcended societal judgments and personal challenges.

If anybody wanted to touch him, he would look at me as if asking for my permission to go to them.
