Low Countries Dominate Suikerrock: 73 of 76 Artists from Belgium or Netherlands

The Suikerrock festival in Tienen, Belgium, is heavily dominated by artists from the Low Countries, with an impressive 73 out of 76 performers originating from Belgium or the Netherlands. This strong regional focus is a deliberate choice by organizer Walter Kestens, who sees no need to look further afield when exceptional talent is available close to home.

"Why would we look further when we have excellent artists in our own region?" Kestens stated, explaining that his programming priorities are driven by audience desires. He noted that the festival has been fortunate to showcase significant talent from Flanders in recent years, making a local focus a natural fit. The success of Dutch pop star Roxy Dekker last year, who drew a large crowd, further validates this approach, as Dutch artists like Joost, Donnie, and Suzan & Freek are also popular choices.

Kestens emphasized that these regional artists are on par with their British or American counterparts. He views it as a duty to provide opportunities for local talent across the festival's four stages, accommodating artists at various career points. Suikerrock aims to contribute to the growth of young artists. Past performers who gained wider recognition after appearing at the festival include Amber Broos, Kaat Van Stralen, and Dikke. The festival strives to program a diverse range of genres, from local acts like Bas Serra to DJs such as Kleine Frigo, ensuring a varied experience for attendees.
