Low-pressure system keeps Taiwan on alert for heavy rain and sudden downpours

Taiwan remains under the influence of a low-pressure system, with rain and thunderstorms possible across the island and the north and northeast facing longer wet periods. Localized heavy rain could develop, particularly in northern areas, central Taiwan and mountain regions.

The Central Weather Administration said southern Taiwan would see shorter spells of rain, while central Taiwan and the east would have more localized showers, mainly in the afternoon. People heading outdoors were advised to carry rain gear. After several days of rain, residents in mountainous areas were warned about landslides, falling rocks and rapidly rising creek levels. Low-lying areas could also experience flooding.

Temperatures were expected to remain between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, with extensive cloud cover and rain making conditions feel relatively comfortable. Meteorologist Wu Der-Rong said strong convection could continue from the fourth through the sixth, bringing lightning, strong winds and sudden intense rain.

The agency said Typhoon Korowang, the season's 23rd light typhoon, would remain near waters around the Ryukyu Islands until Tuesday and would not directly affect Taiwan. Long waves were possible along the southeastern coast, including Orchid Island and Green Island, prompting a warning for people visiting the shore.

Air quality was forecast to remain mostly good because rainfall would help clear pollutants. The weather should gradually stabilize from Monday through Thursday as northerly winds strengthen and moisture decreases, although scattered showers will continue in northern, eastern and mountainous areas.
