Lower Saxony CDU Leader Confident of Mayoral Wins and Strongest Party Status

Sebastian Lechner, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Lower Saxony, expressed confidence in his party's prospects ahead of the upcoming local elections. He anticipates winning a significant number of mayoral races and securing the position of the strongest political force within the state. Lechner made these remarks during a visit to a DLRG station at the Steinhuder Meer, which marked the beginning of a four-week tour across various municipalities.

Lechner dismissed concerns that the federal government's low approval ratings might negatively impact the CDU's campaign in Lower Saxony. While acknowledging that state campaigns cannot be entirely detached from national trends, he emphasized the highly personal nature of local elections. "This means it's also a bit about whether I know the person locally? I know them from the fire department, I know them from the shooting club, I know what they are like," he stated, highlighting the importance of familiar, trusted local candidates.

The CDU leader is banking on the strength of his party's candidates to leverage this "personality factor." The elections are scheduled for September 13, with potential runoffs on September 27. In the 2021 local elections at the district level, the CDU narrowly outperformed the Social Democratic Party (SPD), securing 31.7% of the vote compared to the SPD's 30.0%. The Greens garnered 15.9%, the FDP 6.5%, the AfD 4.6%, and the Left Party 2.8%.
