LPPC confers SAN rank on 68 lawyers

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has announced the approval of 68 legal practitioners for elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). This significant decision was reached during the LPPC's 174th plenary session, which convened in Abuja under the leadership of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.

The rank of SAN is conferred upon legal professionals who demonstrate exceptional distinction, either through their advocacy in courts or their academic contributions to legal scholarship. According to a statement issued by Kabir Akan, Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Secretary of the LPPC, all shortlisted candidates are required to successfully complete a mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme. The date for this program will be communicated later.

The committee said the rank of SAN is conferred on legal practitioners who have demonstrated “exceptional distinction either as advocates in the courts or as academics contributing significantly to the development of legal scholarship.”

The committee has scheduled the swearing-in ceremony for the 68 successful applicants for October 12, 2026. Among the successful candidates, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri was named as the recipient of the academic applicant award for the 2026 SAN conferment exercise. The LPPC also issued a stern warning to the newly approved SANs against publishing or encouraging the publication of congratulatory messages, advertisements, or goodwill notices related to their nomination or conferment, citing potential sanctions for breaches of statutory or ethical rules.
