Luigi Mangione is reportedly expected to plead guilty as early as today in the federal case that accuses him of stalking and fatally shooting health insurance CEO Brian Thompson. The potential plea comes from a person familiar with the matter, who cautioned that Mangione could still change his mind. Mangione's legal team, along with spokespeople for the Justice Department and Manhattan federal prosecutors, declined to comment on the developing situation.

Mangione is accused of traveling to New York City to ambush Thompson, 50, and shooting him outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024, as the executive was on his way to UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference. He is due in federal court on Friday for a hearing related to the two stalking charges he faces. It remains unclear which specific charge or charges Mangione intends to plead guilty to.

The potential guilty plea could significantly affect Mangione's separate state murder trial, which is scheduled to begin on September 8. Under New York law, a state prosecution can be barred if a federal case is resolved first, particularly if it ends in a guilty plea.
