Lukaku scores on international return as Belgium defeat Croatia 2-0

Napoli forward Romelu Lukaku marked his return to international football with a goal as Belgium secured a 2-0 victory over Croatia in a World Cup friendly played in Rijeka. Lukaku, who had been sidelined with injury since September 2025, found the back of the net in the 96th minute, adding to Belgium's lead in their penultimate match before the tournament begins.

The Belgian side took the lead in the 38th minute through Aston Villa playmaker Youri Tielemans. Despite a strong effort from Croatia's captain Luka Modric, who played with a mask due to an injury, and a shot that hit the crossbar from Osasuna striker Ante Budimir near the hour mark, Croatia could not find the equalizer.

Lukaku's goal, his 90th for Belgium, came in injury time, sealing the win for the Red Devils. The striker has had limited playing time for his club this season due to a hip issue, featuring in only 64 minutes. This friendly win provides a confidence boost ahead of their World Cup campaign.

Belgium is set to play their World Cup opener against Egypt on June 15. Croatia, meanwhile, who were semi-finalists in the 2022 World Cup, will conclude their preparations by hosting Slovenia on Sunday before facing England in their opening World Cup match on June 17.
