Lupi: 'It was urgent to help families and businesses. The opposition should be responsible on this'

Maurizio Lupi, leader of the Noi Moderati party, emphasized the critical need for immediate government action to support Italian families and businesses facing potential international crises, particularly concerning energy. He called for a unified parliamentary approach to access European flexibility mechanisms designed to mitigate the impact of the energy crisis.

It was urgent to address together the possible worsening of the international crisis. We had to share whether to activate the flexibility that Europe grants us to face the energy crisis. We will proceed to a parliamentary passage as soon as possible to start the process and obtain resources.

Lupi urged opposition parties to demonstrate greater responsibility during this turbulent period. He argued that assisting citizens and businesses should transcend political divides, especially given the current international instability. His remarks came in response to accusations that the government is not adequately addressing Italians' concerns.

The opposition is playing opposition. Today, however, more responsibility would be needed from them too. Helping families and businesses in a troubled and unstable international period should be of interest to everyone.

Addressing internal coalition dynamics, Lupi downplayed divisions, stating that Noi Moderati's role is to ensure the coalition acts as a responsible governing force. He supported granting a presidential pardon for a jeweler convicted of assault, provided the individual shows remorse, but cautioned against vigilantism. He also criticized the violent protests following a death in Bologna, deeming it unacceptable that left-wing figures did not condemn the destruction.

No rift. Our role in the coalition is precisely to call for responsibility to be a governing force. On the Roggero case, we are in favor of granting a pardon, in the face of repentance, and the evaluation will be up to the president of the Republic. It is right, for example, to eliminate the paradox: whoever causes you damage, like a robber, cannot then claim compensation from their victim. But never vigilante justice.

Regarding security laws, Lupi disagreed with the League's proposal to expand self-defense rights, arguing that existing laws are clear and that governing requires seriousness rather than chasing public opinion. He contrasted his party's focus on enacting legislation, such as decrees on prisons and fair wages, with the populist rhetoric of figures like Vannacci, who he suggested engages in "folklore" rather than substantive governance.

The law on self-defense exists and is clear. For us, it is always wrong to chase public opinion by riding its emotions. Those who govern have a duty to be serious and responsible. Naturally, the League is free to make its proposals and for us to say that the law on self-defense, as it is, is clear.
