Lutz: 'Individual Work is Essential; Summer is Key for Player Development'

Danijel Lutz, a respected figure in Croatian basketball, stresses that serious personal progress for players hinges on dedicated individual work, particularly during the summer months. Lutz, currently an assistant coach for the Croatian national team under head coach Tomislav Mijatović, has carved out a notable career, marked by significant achievements and a diverse international experience.

Lutz's coaching journey includes leading Cibona to two championship titles in 2013. Despite this success, he felt overlooked for the opportunity to defend those titles. This experience, though disappointing, ultimately strengthened him. He then sought opportunities abroad, starting in Kosovo, where he turned a team's fortunes around, achieving 19 consecutive wins after a poor start and experiencing some of the most cherished moments of his career.

His career then took him to the Far East, coaching in South Korea and the Philippines. Lutz views working in these countries, as well as Israel, as immensely enriching, not only from a basketball perspective but also culturally. He gained exposure to various styles of play and met many remarkable people.

Now part of the national team setup, Lutz sees a strong resemblance in team chemistry between the current squad and the successful 2016 team that placed fifth at the Rio Olympics. He notes that players are highly aware of the opportunity before them and understand their roles within the team's hierarchy. The collective dedication and desire to achieve something significant are palpable.

Lutz has also established himself as a specialist in individual training, working with top Croatian players like Ivica Zubac and Dario Matković, as well as promising young talents. His core requirement for collaboration is maximum dedication and work ethic, as he believes in fostering genuine commitment from those he trains.
