MacKay Children's Hospital expands pediatric services to Hsinchu County's mountainous tribes

Hsinchu County is taking a significant step towards medical equity by bringing specialized pediatric care directly into its remote tribal communities. The Hsinchu County Government Health Bureau, in collaboration with the Ts'ai-shih Township Health Center and Taipei MacKay Children's Hospital, officially launched a pediatric specialist clinic on August 29th.

This initiative aims to bridge the gap in healthcare access for children living in the mountainous regions of Ts'ai-shih Township. The clinic will provide essential services, including general pediatric consultations, growth and development assessments, and medical referrals. By establishing this service within the township health center, the project directly addresses the challenges of distance and travel that often prevent families from seeking timely medical attention for their children.

Taipei MacKay Children's Hospital is deploying specialist physicians to staff the clinic. In a move to further alleviate the financial strain on local families, registration fees and co-payments will be waived, mirroring existing policies designed to support healthcare access in mountainous and remote areas. This ensures that specialized medical care is not only geographically accessible but also affordable.

Bringing medical center-level quality pediatric resources directly to the indigenous communities, and being considerate of the tribal people by waiving registration fees and co-payments, allows tribal children to grow up healthy and safe in the most optimal and convenient environment, regardless of region.

Hsinchu County Magistrate Yang Wen-ko emphasized that improving healthcare in remote areas has been a key focus of his administration. He expressed gratitude to the MacKay Children's Hospital team for bringing "medical center-level quality pediatric resources" directly to the indigenous communities. The initiative is expected to allow children in the region to grow up healthy and safe in the most convenient and high-quality environment possible, regardless of their location.

The clinic is scheduled to operate on select Saturdays through the end of 2026, with plans to adjust the schedule based on demand and service effectiveness. This collaboration signifies a commitment to ensuring that all children in Hsinchu County, regardless of their geographic location, have access to the specialized healthcare they need.
