Madou pomelos target North American markets and enter Canada’s major supermarket chains

Tainan’s famous Madou pomelos are making their way into Canada’s mainstream supermarket trade. The Madou District Farmers’ Association shipped its first 15-ton consignment during the harvest season, opening a new North American outlet for the local fruit.

The shipment contains 1,250 boxes weighing 20 Taiwanese jin each. A second shipment is expected soon, bringing the combined total to 30 tons. The pomelos will be sold through Save-On-Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Buy-Low Foods, H-Mart, Sungiven and Foody World, covering both mainstream and major Asian supermarket channels.

Madou farmers’ association director-general Sun Tzu-min coordinated the export with Yixin Fresh Foods and Canadian importer Taione Trading Ltd. The shipment focuses on large fruit, with each box containing 13 to 14 pomelos. The association said broader distribution could help balance domestic supply and demand during the Mid-Autumn harvest season.

This year’s harvest coincided with persistent rainfall, which produced relatively large and full fruit in parts of the growing area. Officials said the association has been seeking diverse sales channels to distribute the harvest between domestic and overseas markets. Tainan’s deputy agriculture director Wu Wei-ta said production fell by about 20%, but quality reached its highest level in years. Mayor Huang Wei-che said cooperation between the farmers’ association, the city government, exporters and North American retailers had expanded the market for Tainan’s signature autumn fruit.
