Madrid teachers for autistic children face contract non-renewal

The start of August brought unsettling news for families in Madrid: the regional education authority decided not to renew contracts for teachers in specialized autism classrooms. Luliana Radu, whose daughter attends one such class, fears an inexperienced interim teacher will replace a specialist who has been crucial to her child's progress.

This situation affects around thirty schools across the region. Parents argue that children with autism require stability, continuity, and predictability in their education. They believe the regional government is not considering these needs, potentially harming the children's development and emotional well-being.

Autism classrooms (aulas TEA) provide vital support for children with autism spectrum disorder within mainstream schools. These small groups, capped at five students, focus on tailored methodologies. Such specialized units have operated in the Community of Madrid since 2001, with over 900 existing last year.

Teacher stability is paramount for quality education in these settings, according to the Comisiones Obreras Madrid union. They emphasize that continuity with familiar professionals aids emotional stability, learning processes, and the development of established educational projects. Abrupt changes, like replacing a teacher without notice, can create significant difficulties.

Sandra Barragán, mother to two autistic sons, shared her distress after her elder son's autism classroom teacher was not renewed. She noted the teacher had not only improved her daughter's willingness to attend school but also achieved remarkable progress. Barragán fears the upcoming school year could bring anxiety attacks, fear, and school refusal without this key educator.
