Maduro releases first photo update since U.S. detention, smiling and flashing V signs

Nicolás Maduro has appeared smiling in two newly posted photographs, making V signs with both hands while wearing a gray tracksuit and white sneakers. The former Venezuelan president remains detained in New York, and the images were posted on his X account two days after the United States and Venezuela announced a major oil agreement.

The photographs carry a June 25 date. Alongside them, Maduro thanked supporters for their prayers, solidarity and support. He said he and Cilia Flores were holding firm with hearts filled with people’s love, and described the images as a small gift for his grandchildren, children and those who loved them.

The post marked Maduro’s first public appearance since he and Flores were arrested in Caracas during a U.S. military operation in January and transferred to the United States, apart from courtroom sketches. They are being held at a detention facility in Brooklyn.

U.S. media focused on the timing of the post, which came soon after the Trump administration announced it had secured Venezuelan oil interests. President Donald Trump has said the United States would use Venezuelan crude to replenish its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which he said had been nearly depleted under former President Joe Biden.

A federal court in New York has scheduled the couple’s trial for June 1, 2027. They deny the charges, which include drug trafficking and firearms-related allegations, and could face life imprisonment if convicted.
