Maduro seeks immunity to avoid 2027 trial in New York

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilia Flores, 69, appeared in federal court in New York on Thursday for a hearing on charges of narcoterrorism and drug trafficking. The couple, detained in Brooklyn since their January arrest in Caracas, presented a healthier appearance than in previous appearances.

Maduro appeared thinner but in good spirits, maintaining his characteristic mustache. He walked normally, showing no sign of the limp he had in previous hearings.

During the 18-minute hearing before U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, Maduro, who had previously shown a limp, walked normally. He repeatedly adjusted his earpiece while following the proceedings with his lawyers. Flores, wearing a khaki jumpsuit similar to her husband's, also appeared healthier.

The defense is preparing to file a motion arguing for Maduro's immunity as head of state at the time of his arrest. If successful, this could prevent the prosecution from proceeding with a second round of motions and evidence disclosure. The prosecution aims to complete the disclosure of unclassified evidence by September 22 and classified evidence by November 15.

If this motion is accepted, Maduro would not have to submit to the second round of motions where other evidence will be included.

The couple pleaded not guilty to all charges in January. Maduro, who maintains he is the "constitutional president" of Venezuela, and Flores face potential life sentences if convicted. The trial is tentatively scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027, following a joint proposal from the prosecution and defense for a pre-trial motion schedule.
