Magnitude 2.5 earthquake registered in Colombia's Chocó region

A minor earthquake measuring magnitude 2.5 shook the Colombian department of Chocó early Saturday morning, August 15th. The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported the tremor had a shallow depth and occurred at 12:39 a.m. local time.

The epicenter was located in the municipality of Medio San Juan, specifically in the Andagoya area. This seismic event adds to the ongoing activity in the region following a significant magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on Monday, August 10th. That larger earthquake's epicenter was in San José del Palmar, Chocó, at a depth of approximately 103 kilometers, causing widespread damage.

Since the major earthquake, Chocó and other parts of Colombia have been under close monitoring for aftershocks. The SGC continuously tracks seismic movements through its network of stations. While the recent tremor was shallow and of low magnitude, residents in various locations, including Medellín, Armenia, Popayán, parts of Valle del Cauca, and Envigado, reported feeling the movement.
