Magnitude 3.9 Quake in Catania Region Damages Road, No Injuries Reported

A magnitude 3.9 earthquake has struck Linguaglossa, a town in the Etna region of Sicily, Italy. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported the seismic event, with its epicenter located approximately 7 kilometers from the town center. The tremor was distinctly felt by the local population.

The earthquake has caused damage, notably a fracture along the road connecting the Brunek refuge and Casa dei Ragazzi. These facilities, along with nearby restaurants, were evacuated as a precautionary measure. The fracture is associated with the Pernicana fault, which is linked to volcanic activity in the area.

Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily's Civil Protection, confirmed the details, stating that the road to Piano Provenzana, in the Ragabo area, has been "fractured." He added that assessments are ongoing, with Civil Protection, Forestry, and local municipal authorities on site. Despite the noticeable shaking and the damage to infrastructure, there have been no reports of injuries.

The event highlights the seismic and volcanic risks present in the region. While the magnitude was relatively low, the impact on local infrastructure and the subsequent precautionary measures underscore the sensitivity of the area to seismic activity.
