Magnitude 4.9 Earthquake Shakes Sichuan Province, China

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted Yibin city in China's central Sichuan province on Monday morning. The tremor was registered at 8:26 a.m. local time in Changning county, with its epicenter located at 28.32 degrees north latitude and 105.01 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

This latest seismic event adds to a recent spate of tremors that have affected Sichuan province. In the past two months, the region, particularly areas around Yibin like Gao county, has experienced multiple earthquakes. Notably, a magnitude 4.9 quake hit Gao county on August 7, preceded by two smaller earthquakes on August 3.

While the extent of casualties and damage from Monday's quake remains unconfirmed, previous seismic activity in the area has resulted in injuries and damage to homes. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake on June 29, for instance, caused at least 15 minor injuries and affected approximately 900 homes. Sichuan province, situated in a seismically active zone, has a history of significant earthquakes, including a devastating magnitude 8 quake in 2008 that claimed over 90,000 lives.
