Magnitude 5.7 Earthquake Shakes Huánuco Region in Peru

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook the Leoncio Prado province in Peru's Huánuco region on Sunday evening, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP).

The tremor occurred at 8:42 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located 53 kilometers northeast of Aucayacu. The earthquake's depth was recorded at 152 kilometers. The IGP shared the information via the X platform (formerly Twitter).

In response to the seismic event, regional authorities from the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) urged residents to remain calm. They emphasized the importance of identifying safe zones both inside and outside homes to prevent injuries. Indeci also reminded the public to keep emergency kits readily accessible.

An emergency kit, as recommended by Indeci, should include essential items for the initial days following a disaster. These include hygiene products, a first-aid kit with bandages, gauze, and antiseptic solutions, cash in small denominations, warm clothing, non-perishable food items, bottled water, and communication tools like a battery-powered radio and flashlight. Documents, work gloves, and masks are also advised.
