Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Hits Nias, Tremors Felt in North Sumatra

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook Nias Island in North Sumatra, Indonesia, on Wednesday at 1:02 PM Western Indonesian Time. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported the epicenter was located in the sea, approximately 157 kilometers southeast of South Nias, at a depth of 35 kilometers. BMKG stated that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat. The strongest shaking, measured at IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity), was felt in North Tapanuli. This intensity means the earthquake was felt by many people indoors and by some outdoors, causing rattling windows and doors, and creaking walls. Other areas, including Padang Sidempuan, South Nias, Padang Panjang, and parts of West Sumatra, experienced shaking at III MMI, described as feeling like a truck passing by. In Tapanuli Tengah and Gunung Sitoli, the shaking was felt at II MMI, causing light objects to sway. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that residents in South Nias felt the tremors for 3-5 seconds. The shaking also extended to West Pasaman, Agam, and Padang cities in West Sumatra. As of 1:30 PM WIB, BMKG had not recorded any aftershocks and reiterated the absence of tsunami risk. Both BMKG and BNPB urged the public to remain calm, avoid unverified information, and check buildings for damage, advising against entering compromised structures.
