Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Jolts Ica, Peru; No Major Injuries Reported

The earth in Ica continues to shake, reminding us of the ever-present threat of seismic activity in our region. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake, originating 41 kilometers south of the city at a depth of 81 kilometers, jolted residents on Tuesday afternoon.

The tremor, felt as far as Lima and surrounding areas, caused immediate alarm, particularly as it coincided with school dismissal times and busy periods in the city. While the National Geophysical Institute (IGP) confirmed the details of the quake, the immediate concern for the people of Ica was safety.

Reports of damage to homes, commercial centers, and parks have emerged, along with broken windows in some establishments. Thankfully, initial assessments from Civil Defense indicate no major health injuries, with Walter Mendoza of Ica's Civil Defense stating that the "dry and quick movement" sent people into the streets as a precaution. The Peruvian Navy confirmed that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami alert.
