Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Hits Indonesia's Flores Island, Killing at Least 20

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Flores Island on Saturday, causing widespread devastation and claiming at least 20 lives. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, also prompted a temporary tsunami warning for the region.

Rescuers are currently searching for survivors in the city of Maumere, where the impact was severe. Fatur Rahman, head of the Maumere rescue service, confirmed the death toll and stated that six people were injured, some seriously. Two individuals remain trapped beneath debris. Numerous residential buildings and other structures have sustained damage.

The earthquake's epicenter was located about 70 kilometers northwest of Ende, a town in the central part of the island. Aftershocks, including tremors measuring 6.1 and 5.9, were also recorded. While the tsunami warning was later lifted, the immediate aftermath has left communities reeling.

Flores Island is part of Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province. The western part of the island, including Labuan Bajo, is a popular tourist destination known for diving and excursions to the Komodo National Park, home to the famous Komodo dragons. The central region around Ende is more remote and less developed for tourism. Indonesia, situated in the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
