Magpies Great Pendlebury Joins Gold Coast Suns for 2027

Collingwood's iconic games record holder, Scott Pendlebury, is set to embark on a new chapter in his illustrious AFL career, joining the Gold Coast Suns in 2027. The move comes as Pendlebury enters the league as an unrestricted free agent, signaling a significant shift for both the player and the Suns.

The contract is reportedly a multi-year agreement designed to leverage Pendlebury's extensive experience. For his first two seasons, the 38-year-old will occupy a hybrid role, contributing both on the field and in a coaching capacity. Following this initial period, he is slated to transition into a full-time assistant coach role for an additional two years, mentoring the next generation of talent.

Pendlebury's departure from Collingwood marks the end of an era for the Magpies. Despite his legendary status, the club did not offer him a new contract to continue his playing career. He leaves the club having achieved remarkable success, including two premierships, a Norm Smith Medal, and six All-Australian selections, cementing his place as one of Collingwood's all-time greats.

His new role at the Suns is expected to mirror the influential transition of Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge, who joined the Brisbane Lions in a similar on-field coaching capacity in 2018. Hodge's mentorship was instrumental in the Lions' subsequent success, including two premierships. The deal is expected to be officially finalized when the AFL's free agency period commences on October 2.
