Maitland-Niles screamer earns Everton 2-2 draw with Man United

Ainsley Maitland-Niles produced a stunning equaliser with virtually the last kick of the game to give Everton a 2-2 draw against Manchester United on his debut.

Benjamin Sesko appeared to have won the match for United when he headed in Luke Shaw’s cross in the 87th minute. But substitute Maitland-Niles met the ball first time from 30 yards, preserving Everton’s unbeaten start to the season.

United had taken the lead early in the second half through Bryan Mbeumo, who cut inside from the right and placed a left-footed shot into the far corner. Everton grew into the match, and Tyrique George equalised in the 82nd minute with a powerful strike at the near post.

United also hit the bar through Bruno Fernandes in the first half, while Matheus Cunha missed from a good position. Everton had the better of the attacking chances, including a free header from Thierno Barry that went over the bar. Jack Grealish, beginning a second loan spell at Everton, came on in the 66th minute and helped improve their attacking cohesion.

United were left disappointed after twice taking the lead without securing three points. They sit 11th with four points from three games, while Everton are eighth with five points. The draw also reflected Everton’s persistence despite the club’s thin squad after a much-criticised transfer window.
