Maitland-Niles stuns Manchester United with last-gasp equaliser as Everton rescue point

Ainsley Maitland-Niles marked his Everton debut with a stunning long-range equaliser, striking from 30 yards with virtually the final kick to deny Manchester United victory.

Benjamin Sesko appeared to have won Sunday’s match for United when he headed in Luke Shaw’s cross in the 87th minute. Maitland-Niles responded with a first-time shot that preserved Everton’s unbeaten start in a 2-2 Premier League draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool.

United had taken the lead early in the second half through Bryan Mbeumo, who cut inside from the right and placed a left-footed shot into the far corner. Everton grew into the match and equalised in the 82nd minute when Tyrique George struck the ball powerfully past goalkeeper Senne Lammens at the near post.

United had also hit the bar through Bruno Fernandes in the first half, but Everton created more attacking chances and had more shots on target. Matheus Cunha missed from a promising position, while Thierno Barry headed over from Merlin Rohl’s cross. James Tarkowski later denied Cunha with a last-ditch tackle.

Jack Grealish came on in the 66th minute at the start of a second loan spell on Merseyside and helped improve Everton’s attacking cohesion. United now have four points from three games and sit 11th, while Everton are eighth with five points.
