Major European Bank Issues Important Recommendation: This Is the Minimum Amount of Cash You Should Have at Home

Sweden's central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, has issued a significant recommendation for citizens to maintain a reserve of cash at home, sufficient for one week of essential expenses. This guidance is part of a broader national effort to bolster societal preparedness for potential consequences of military or cyberattacks, particularly in light of heightened security concerns.

The central bank advises that each adult should have approximately 1,000 Swedish kronor (about $110) in cash. Alongside this, individuals are encouraged to possess bank cards from various issuers and utilize local payment services such as Swish. These directives represent the first time the Riksbank has directly provided citizens with payment advice for emergency situations.

"Citizens are an important part of Sweden's total defense and are key to strengthening national preparedness," the Riksbank stated. "Access to different payment methods increases the public's ability to conduct transactions during temporary disruptions, crises, or, in the worst case, war." This initiative is framed within a larger strategy by Swedish authorities to ready the population for scenarios involving military or cyber threats, with a particular focus on potential impacts stemming from Russia.

Sweden's payment system is notably digitized, with cash transactions accounting for only about one in ten. The Riksbank has previously called for legislation to protect the status of cash, though such a law has not yet been enacted. Neighboring countries Finland and Norway have issued similar recommendations, urging their citizens to keep a certain amount of cash and multiple bank cards readily available.
