Major Festival Threatened by Severe Weather as Heat Records Tumble

The Roskilde Festival in Denmark, which commenced today, is under threat from severe weather conditions. Organizers have issued warnings that parts of the festival grounds may need to be temporarily closed due to the risk of lightning, thunder, and powerful winds. The festival, expecting around 130,000 visitors, stated on its website that safety measures could lead to area shutdowns if the weather develops as anticipated.

Some regions have already been impacted by the storm, with a reader-submitted photo to Danish broadcaster DR showing hailstones measuring three centimeters in diameter. Concurrently, Denmark has experienced record-breaking heat, with temperatures reaching 37 degrees Celsius in two locations.

In Sweden, the heatwave continues, with Malmö recording a temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius, potentially rising further. This follows earlier fears that Sweden's national heat record might be broken in Kristianstad, where temperatures peaked at 35 degrees. Other Swedish locations like Ljungby and Helsingborg also reported high temperatures.

Amidst the heat, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued warnings for thunderstorms in northeastern Götaland and eastern Svealand. These areas, along with parts of Svealand and Gotland, face high fire risks. Additionally, warnings for high temperatures, at least 33 degrees, remain in effect for Blekinge, Kalmar, Skåne, and Kronoberg counties.
