Major fire breaks out in Baranja: Blaze 'swallows' farm, over 50 firefighters battle flames for days

A large-scale fire broke out on a farm in Podolje, Croatia, engulfing a significant hay storage area and requiring the efforts of over 50 firefighters. The blaze, which began on Tuesday evening, has necessitated a prolonged firefighting operation that is expected to last for several days.

Numerous firefighting units from the Baranja region responded to the emergency. The affected structure, a hayloft measuring approximately 100 by 12 meters and six meters high, contained a substantial quantity of hay. In addition to the hay, an old combine harvester and a tractor were also destroyed in the fire.

Firefighters worked through the night, with rotations of personnel and vehicles ensuring continuous intervention. The sheer volume of hay and the challenging nature of the fire mean that crews will remain on site for the foreseeable future. The local emergency center reported that the fire covered an area of about 7,200 cubic meters.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation. Police have stated that no injuries were reported. An official investigation will commence once the fire is extinguished and conditions allow for a thorough examination of the scene.
