Major Investment in Gunpowder Production Across Europe: "Needed More Than Ever"

Europe is undertaking a major expansion of its gunpowder production capabilities, a critical component for its defense industry, which has faced supply bottlenecks. The surge in demand is fueled by the ongoing war in Ukraine and a strategic push for greater European autonomy in defense manufacturing.

German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall announced a significant investment of nearly 4 billion Swedish kronor (approximately $380 million) to double its gunpowder production at its facility in Aschau am Inn, Germany. The company will also double its workforce at the site and invest over 3 billion kronor in its gunpowder factories in Switzerland and Spain. This move aims to address the escalating need for gunpowder, essential for artillery shells, ammunition, and defensive systems.

Professor Hans Liwång from the Swedish Defence University highlighted the urgency, stating, "I don't think anyone in the defense industry understood how fast the increase would need to be." He explained that gunpowder is indispensable for modern weaponry and defense systems, including those protecting vehicles from incoming projectiles, and is crucial for replenishing depleted stocks due to the conflict in Ukraine.

The defense industry in Europe needs more gunpowder than in a long time, because they are filling their stocks with weapons built and assembled in Europe.

While the increased production is vital for filling European-made weapon inventories and reducing reliance on U.S. suppliers, complete self-sufficiency remains a challenge. Liwång noted that the industry depends on raw materials from other parts of the world, such as nitrocellulose from China. "We will never reach the level where we are completely self-sufficient," he stated, emphasizing the continued need for international cooperation.
