Major Landslide Blocks Entrance to Taiwan's Mingfeng Ancient Trail; Hikers Advised to Reroute

A significant landslide has occurred at the entrance of the popular Mingfeng Ancient Trail in Miaoli, Taiwan, prompting safety warnings for hikers. The incident, attributed to the impact of Typhoon Bavet, has resulted in a large-scale collapse of soil and rock, rendering the original entry point completely inaccessible.

The Shitan Township Office confirmed the extensive damage, noting that the area is currently unstable due to loose soil and rocks. A safety cordon has been established to prevent access. The office is urging all hikers planning to visit the trail to strictly adhere to safety guidelines and avoid attempting to traverse the collapsed section.

To ensure continued access while prioritizing safety, the township office has established an alternative route. Hikers are advised to proceed from the cement road located to the right of the original entrance. After approximately 80 meters along this road, they should follow signage to turn left, which will lead them back to the original trail.

Authorities also reminded hikers that the detour passes close to residential areas. They requested that visitors maintain low noise levels, avoid loud disturbances, and help keep the environment clean by not littering or lingering unnecessarily. Strict adherence to the marked route and avoidance of the dangerous, cordoned-off area are crucial for personal safety.
